The summer component of the E.O.P.C consists of six weeks (June 22nd thru July 31st). The first week is structured for staff training The second week through the end of the fifth week (4 weeks) consists of intense instruction, cultural and recreational activities. Residential staff travels with students to Northern California. The instructional staff reports to the EOPC office to complete paperwork and other assigned duties. The services offered are intended to increase science and mathematical skills, reading comprehension, critical thinking and writing, and computer skills. At the
same time, students are exposed to diverse cultural endeavors that will allow them to
develop an overall understanding of their Students attend classes daily from 8: 00 a m. to 5: 00 p. m. Prior to the first class period, they gather in a forum to discuss speaking issues of importance while at the same time decreasing their fear of public speaking and improving their speech. They are assigned to groups based on the college-required courses that they will be taking upon returning to their regular schools and their academic needs. Students are pre and post-tested in different areas at the beginning and at the end of the program. During the process, they are frequently tested and graded by their perspective instructors. Students are constantly assisted by tutors and residential advisors on school assignments which they are having difficulties. On weekends, students participate in cultural and recreational activities. They attend plays, conferences, workshops and participate in yoga, aikido, jazz exercise, and painting classes. They also have the opportunity to socialize with students from other Trio projects. Students are monitored 24 hours, seven days a week by their respective resident advisor. They receive individual and group advisement daily. Students are under stern disciplinary policies and a structured program that creates not only the proper working environment, which permits them to function efficiently, but offers them the tranquility and necessary safety that gives them peace of mind and security. |
